Juan Marichal was born in the Dominican Republic on October 20, 1937. He was one of 11 siblings in a family that relied on agriculture to make a living. Marichal's father, Néstor, was a sugar cane cutter and encouraged his children to work hard to improve their circumstances.
Marichal had a close relationship with his family, and he often credited his success in baseball to the support he received from his parents and siblings. His younger brother, Felipe Alou, also went on to have a successful career in Major League Baseball and the two played together on the San Francisco Giants in the 1960s.
Marichal married his wife, Alma Rosa Guzmán, in 1972 and they went on to have two children together. The couple also adopted a son, whom they named Juan Jr. Marichal has been involved in several charitable organizations throughout his career, including the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, the Latin American Educational Foundation, and the March of Dimes.
